As per the instruction given by the Directorate of Technical Education to visit L&T GEOSTRUCTURE, CENTRAL GEOTECHNICAL LAB, we had taken the prior permission from Mr. Damodaran sir   (NHSRCL) to visit laboratory site of National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited project on 02-04-2022.

Mr. Patil (NHSRCL) warmly welcome all the students and faculties of VGEC to the Geotechnical laboratory. Mr. Patil gave a brief overview on the project and laboratory set up. He explained quantum of soil sampling and testing procedure of the project.

The length of Mumbai - Ahmedabad High Speed Rail) is about 508.17 km out of that 46% (237km) will be built by L&T in C4 package. Out of 508.17 km 5.1% (25.92km) consists of tunnel, 2.5% (12.70km) consists of Cut & Fill 9.22% (46.85km) consists of bridges and the rest consists of viaduct.

The laboratory is expanded in an area of 58000 Sq.ft in Chathan village of Surat, Gujarat. This is the largest Geotechnical laboratory in the country where around 3500 test per day is being carried out. 20 Nos of Geotechnical Engineers and 190 Nos of Lab Technicians are working currently.

The work has been divided in 4 modules:

  1. General Lab Module for  evaluation of Soil Index Properties
  2. Triaxial Module for evaluation of Shear Parameters
  3. Consolidation Module
  4. Storage Module and sample preparation module

hey explained us Hydrometer test, how it is performed and how further the analysis will take place and get the particle size distribution for the silt and clay particles. They showed the Cassagrande apparatus hey performed liquid limit test, plastic limit and shrinkage limit test on clayey sample. They also explained the importance of plasticity chart to identify the types of clay. Then they briefly explained the Free Swell index test, how the water and Kerosin mixed soil sample is used to measure the free swell index. Total nos of Index property sets were 490 sets

Acknowledgements: We would like to thank respected Director Sir, (DTE) for arranging such a fruitful visit. We also express heartfelt thanks to Mr. Damodaran sir, Mr. Patil sir and their entire team for their technical support. This Lab visit would not have been possible without kind support of Principal VGEC, Dr. N.N.Bhuptani sir for helping us with all the administrative formalities.
