one day technical visit to NHSRCL - L and T Laboratory, SURAT

As per the instruction given by the Directorate of Technical Education to visit L&T GEOSTRUCTURE, CENTRAL GEOTECHNICAL LAB, we had taken the prior permission from Mr. Damodaran sir

  (NHSRCL) to visit laboratory site of National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited project on 09-04-2022.

Mr. N. C. Patil (NHSRCL), Mr. Venkatesh, Mr. Shivbalan & Mr. Sabri warmly welcome all the students and faculties of VGEC to the Geotechnical laboratory. Mr. Shivbalan gave a brief overview on the project and laboratory set up. He explained quantum of soil sampling and testing procedure of the project.

The length of Mumbai - Ahmedabad High Speed Rail) is about 508.17 km out of that 46% (237km) will be built by L&T in C4 package. Out of 508.17 km 5.1% (25.92km) consists of tunnel, 2.5% (12.70km) consists of Cut & Fill 9.22% (46.85km) consists of bridges and the rest consists of viaduct.

The laboratory is expanded in an area of 58000 Sq.ft in Chathan village of Surat, Gujarat. This is the largest Geotechnical laboratory in the country where around 3500 test per day is being carried out. 20 Nos of Geotechnical Engineers and 190 Nos of Lab Technicians are working currently.

The work has been divided in 4 modules:

  1. General Lab Module for  evaluation of Soil Index Properties
  2. Triaxial Module for evaluation of Shear Parameters
  3. Consolidation Module
  4. Storage Module and sample preparation modul

The technical visit explained the significance of      Geotechnical Engineering in Professional world. All the students took   active participation and there was a very good interaction between L&T staff members, students and faculty coordinators. During the visit many topics of geotechnical engineering, sampling procedure, sample collection and design were discussed. Safety issues were also covered. All the lab members extended full support. After the visit. all students are technically enriched. Visit concluded with vote of thanks to all NHSRCL - L&T staff members for their kind support and humble cooperation.
