An Expert Lecture on Thermal Plasma for Waste Management

03 July, 2021

The Chemical Engineering Department under the auspices of the Institution of Engineers India (IEI) Students’ Chapter organized an expert lecture on “Thermal Plasma for Waste Management” on 3rd July 2021, on Microsoft Teams under the coordination of Dr. Milap G. Nayak. The webinar was conducted by expert Mr. P. Vadivel Murugan (Scientific Officer, Institute of Plasma Research - FCIPT division, Gandhinagar). The webinar was attended by 45 students from various semesters.

The prime objectives of the expert lecture were to create curiosity among the participants about Plasma generation & to discuss the usages of Plasma technology over conventional techniques. The expert lecture was focused on encouraging the participants to work with the IPR in their undergraduate or postgraduate research work along with explaining the use of plasma for waste disposal & energy generation to the participants.

The expert discussed generation of plasma, its requirement, different electrodes used in plasma generation. He also talked about advantages of plasma generation for waste disposals such as biomedical, paper or organic waste, petroleum residue compared to conventional incineration or pyrolysis method along with use of plasma-based pyrolysis and incineration and its installation details across the country. The participants learnt how to categorize the plasma & plasma generation technologies and their advantages over conventional techniques.
