Training Program on - Process Engineering and Design (Session - 10)

01 May, 2021

The Chemical Engineering Department under the Institution of Engineers India (IEI)  organized an online training program on ‘Process Engineering and Design’ from February to April 2021. The session-10 of the following training program entitled “Piping and Instrumentation for Process Industries” was organized on 1st May 2021, from 12:30 to 2:30 PM on Microsoft Teams under the coordination of Prof. U. P. Christian & Prof. S. B. Thakore. The webinar was conducted by expert Dhruti Mehta (Process Engineer, Technical Services, GNFC- Bharuch). The training program was attended by 68 UG & PG students of Chemical Engineering from various institutes of Gujarat.

The prime objective of this training program was to discuss the stepwise procedure for the design of process plant equipment such as shell & tube heat exchanger, distillation column, absorb pump, flowmeters and piping. Along with that, it also aims to provide guidance about the selection criteria among the different types of equipments & the mechanical design of pressure vessels. The participants were made aware of the software such as HTRI and ASPEN for the design and simulation of equipment with the help of different case studies.

During the session, the expert Dhruti Mehta discussed theoretical consideration for piping and instrumentation in chemical process industries, common nomenclature in piping and instrumentation diagrams and sofware applicable for the preparation of the piping and instrumentation diagram. She also discussed some case studies. The participants got knowledge about the interpretation of process variables data from the piping and instrumentation diagram. The participants interacted with the expert about creating an understanding of how to comprehend an actual piping and instrumentation diagram.
