A Faculty Development Programme on Green Buildings for Sustainable Development

The one-week Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on "Green Buildings for Sustainable Development" was successfully conducted at RC Technical Institute, Ahmedabad, from 29th July to 2nd August 2024. The event was organized by the Gujarat Extension Centre of NITTTR Bhopal in collaboration with the Civil Engineering Department of VGEC, Chandkheda. A total of 15 faculty participants attended this comprehensive training.

Session 1: Inauguration and Programme Overview

The program began with registration, inaugural address, and a programme overview. Faculty from the Civil Engineering Department of VGEC were present. The expectations of participants were also discussed.

Session 2: Elements of Green Buildings – Dr. Anupam Kumar Singh

This session introduced core concepts of green buildings, including energy efficiency, eco-materials, and site sustainability principles.

Session 3: Sustainable Uses of Water – Dr. Anupam Kumar Singh

The lecture focused on water conservation strategies, rainwater harvesting, and efficient plumbing systems in green buildings.

Session 4: Task 1

  • Participants completed Task 1 based on the day’s topics, reflecting on the importance of green components in building design.
  • Day 2 – 30th July 2024

Session 1: Green Building Rating Systems – Dr. Krupesh Chauhan

This session covered various national and international green rating frameworks including IGBC, GRIHA, and LEED.

Session 2: National Education Policy – NITTTR Faculty

A discussion on NEP 2020 and its emphasis on sustainability in technical education.

Session 3: Visit to Net Zero Energy Building – CEPT, Ahmedabad

Participants visited the CEPT campus to observe real-time applications of energy-efficient technologies.

Session 4: Reflection and Discussion

Open discussion session post-visit to reflect on insights gathered and challenges of implementing NZEB principles.

Session 1: Indoor Air Quality – Dr. Daya Kaul

Focused on pollutants, health impacts, and mitigation techniques for enhancing indoor air quality in buildings.

Session 2: Entrepreneurship in Engineering – NITTTR Faculty

Covered the fundamentals of innovation, entrepreneurship models, and opportunities in sustainable technologies.

Session 3: Green Building Studio – Mr. Amitava Haldar

Practical session on Autodesk software for building performance simulation and green certification.

Session 4: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) – Mr. Amitava Haldar

Explained the methodology to assess environmental impacts associated with building materials and design choices.

Session 1: Sustainable Construction Site Practices – Er. Ravi Baroliya

Highlighted on-site sustainability practices, waste minimization, and EHS (Environment, Health, and Safety).

Session 2: Solid Waste Management – Dr. Kannan Iyer

Discussed classification, segregation, recycling strategies, and policies around construction waste.

Session 3: Materials, Microclimate & Energy – Dr. Anurag Kandya

Explored the relationship between building material choice and thermal comfort, local climate, and energy consumption.

Session 4: Task 2

Participants documented sustainable elements in a hypothetical site using insights from the day’s sessions.

Explored material selection for embodied energy reduction and efficient energy use through passive and active systems.

Session 2: Task 3

Applied design-based task to review participant understanding of energy and material analysis.

Session 3: Achievement Test

An objective and descriptive assessment of key concepts learned throughout the programme.

Session 4: Valedictory and Photo Session

The FDP concluded with feedback collection, certificate distribution, and a group photo session including all participants and faculty.
