Objective of the Session:

The Department of Electrical Engineering organized an expert talk on “Practical Aspects of Testing and Maintenance of Switchgear” on 20th September 2021 for the 7th semester students. The session was delivered by Mr. Vishal Trivedi from Topline Switchgear Pvt. Ltd., who has extensive industrial experience in the field of switchgear design, testing, and maintenance.

Mr. Trivedi began by highlighting the importance of switchgear in ensuring safety, reliability, and uninterrupted operation of power systems. He provided an overview of different types of switchgear such as low-voltage, medium-voltage, and high-voltage switchgear, and their role in power distribution networks.

The lecture focused on practical aspects of testing and maintenance, including:

  • Routine and type testing of switchgear
  • Insulation resistance testing, high-voltage withstand tests, and contact resistance measurement
  • Importance of preventive and predictive maintenance
  • Common faults in switchgear and industrial case studies
  • Safety precautions while handling and testing equipment
  • Role of standards (IEC, IS) in switchgear testing

He also emphasized how improper maintenance practices can lead to equipment failure, downtime, or accidents, and explained best practices adopted in industry for extending the life cycle and reliability of switchgear.

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where students inquired about career opportunities in switchgear industries, real-time testing challenges, and the impact of modern protective relays and digital technologies.
