Expert Lecture on Mass Transfer and Separation Processes: Applications in Chemical Process Industries

05 August, 2021

Mass Transfer and Separation Processes: Applications in Chemical Process Industries” was organized by the Chemical Engineering Department on 5th August 2021, on Microsoft Teams platform. The event was honoured by the presence of the experts  Dr. Kiran D. Patil (Professor and Head in the School of Chemical, Petroleum and Polymer Engineering) and Dr. Vishwanath Karad (MIT World Peace University, Pune, Maharashtra). This successful event was coordinated by Prof. Parin D. Shah and Prof. S. B. Thakore. Around 100 students got benefitted from this session.

The main focus of this event was to explain the importance of mass transfer operations and separation processes. Also, to make the students understand the feasibility of various separation processes in chemical process industries and to correlate capital cost and operating cost for separation processes with percentage purity of final products.

The experts discussed, in brief, the current scenario of Indian Chemical Industries, classification of mass transfer operations, potential industrial applications of mass transfer operations, important aspects of membrane separation processes in chemical and allied industries and separation processes in chemical industries. Also, the topics related to reactive distillation as a promising technology for greener production of industrial chemicals were deeply explained through case studies on reactive distillation. The participants learned about the current scenario and development of Chemical Industries in the Indian economy, the classification of various mass transfer operations and their importance in chemical industries. They were also given an opportunity to interact with the experts and to understand reactive distillation (RD) as an effective separation process via discussion on different case studies. Participants received a thorough knowledge about membrane separation processes and their applications in-process research and development. The expert lecture was very interesting and informative as per the responses from the participants.
